Richard Bert Obituary

Richard William Bert, 79 of Camp Verde, Arizona passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024. He was surrounded by the love of his daughter and sister. Richard (Dick) was born in Pasadena, California to William and Esther Bert, and raised in Monroe, Michigan and Flagstaff, Arizona. At the age of 20, Dick enlisted in the Army and worked in Finance. He traveled all over Europe and the United States as part of the Army Rifle Team and received multiple honors for his marksmanship skills. While stationed at RAF Burtonwood in Cheshire, England he met and married his wife, Sheila Bert in Stockton Heath, England on March 30, 1968. Dick was honorably discharged from the Army and returned to Flagstaff, Arizona in June 1968.

After his time in service, Dick worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenters Union for most of his career. He built homes, roads, and buildings all over Arizona and the southwest. His most recognizable contribution to the state is the Arizona Cardinals Stadium where he received numerous awards for safety and performance as the Superintendent of Construction. He was a passionate outdoorsman, and his dream would have been to spend every day hunting, fishing, or camping if he could. He was known for his witty sense of humor and relentless teasing, which was his way of showing affection. The last ten years of his life he devoted himself to the long-term care of his ailing wife, often sacrificing his own health in the process. His final loving gesture to her was ensuring she was safe in the arms of the Lord before allowing himself to rest in peace, 37 days later.

Dick is survived by his two children, Warren (Kaidie) Bert of Surprise, Arizona, Donna Bert of Colorado Springs, Colorado, three grandchildren; Shelby Bert, and Liam and Meghan Mooney, his siblings; Joyce Manes, Carolyn Cole, Sally Bert, June Bridge, John Bert, and James (Sandra) Bert. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Sheila Bert, his brother, Gerald Bert, his parents, and several extended family members.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
